Movie Review: "Dr. Strange"

Movie Review: "Dr. Strange"

by Wilson Kosasih

With the end of the year coming, Marvel was set to release another of their origin-superhero movie, and Dr. Strange has the chance to show how special he is. With DC Comics struggling with Batman v Superman and disappointing Suicide Squad, sure Marvel could finish up the year with complete kill with this one.

Before losing his hands on a car accident, Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was one of the most sophisticated doctor in town. After traditional medicine and surguries can't help him, With sadness, sorrow, and lost of hope surrounding him, Strange heads to Kathmandu, Nepal and alongside Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), they meet the Supreme One (Tilda Swinton) at Kamar-Taj. The Supreme One shows Strange that the world consists not just one dimension, but a lot. Strange then wants to learn and it turns out he is on a different situation that he thought before.

How can i say this, Marvel nails it once again, with a simple backstory and not so complicated storyline makes this movie a lot enjoyable for ones who never watched the animation or read the comic book before. With a lot of jokes and moral story related to real life sure makes things a lot more interesting, some of them like, "Don't watch your phones when you drive" and maybe "Always share your Wi-fi password to your guests". I'm so glad the director didn't focus on the love story between Strange and Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams), since this is a superhero movie, not some B-rated romance movie.

Benedict Cumberbatch on the other hand, does a pretty good job on "arrogant" Stephen Strange. And since i watched "Sherlock" before, this roles on how to be arrogant suits him very much. Meanwhile, all of the supporting actors do so-so on their performance, since this whole movie keeps focusing so much on Strange. Bad guys on this movie don't really show their "aura" as "I'm the bad guy, don't mess with me" feeling. They turn out to be too weak, and don't have that strong presence. Visual effects are quite good, and fight scenes aren't bad either, considering on how those characters fight in this movie (with magic), which i thought will be boring, turned out to be quite epic.

Overall, this movie worth a lot of your time. It's fun, enjoyable, and beautiful visual effects to calm your eyes. And yes, it is much better than any DC Comics movies that released this year. Will Marvel continues on roll? Let us see that next year. Let's not forget to watch the post credit scene, it will be a surprise for you guys.
