Movie Review: "Star Trek Beyond"
Movie Review: "Star Trek: Beyond"
by Wilson Kosasih
"Star Trek: Beyond" is the third installment on the new reboot on the series. Both of the previous movies, "Star Trek" (2009) and "Star Trek: Into Darkness" (2013) received massive praise from critics and fans. Will this third installment follows the prequels?
Three years into the five-year mission, the USS Enterprise lead by James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his co-captain, Spock (Zachary Quinto) arrives at new Starbase, Yorktown, to replenish their supplies while the crew take shore leave. But the crew don't get their leave too long, as an escape pod drifts out near Yorktown and Kalara, the survivor, claims her ship stranded on Altamid, a planet in the nebula, and the Enterprise is dispatched on a rescue mission. It turns out that Kalara didn't tell the truth about it, and Captain Kirk and his crew will brace for the impossible.
First off, story is way too flat and you can see the end so far away, even from the beginning. I expected something more complex than this, it's just disappointing. People are expecting more from watching both prequels, and it turns out to be a mediocre movie after all. The villains get a little too much character development, and since they are new characters in this movie, they should get more backstory. Idris Elba is an amazing actor, but his role as Krall shows no charisma as a villain. A villain usually has that "fear" aura he gives to the protagonists, but i didn't see that at all. Krall isn't fierce, and mostly only talks about his ambition to crush the human race. Camera angle itself makes me so dizzy from the action scenes, and it's too much to handle (at least for me).
It's not all bad though, most of the casts are still here. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto show their good performance once again as their role. Simon Pegg as Montgomery Scott is still hilarious as ever, makes his every appearance worthwhile. New characters, such as Sofia Boutella as Jaylah helps the movie a little by showcasing a strong female character in the movie. And Joe Taslim as Manas has a lot of screen time, and it makes me and fellow Indonesians proud. I have to say that the crew has done a great job with Krall's and Manas' make-up effect, and it is brilliant. Action scenes weren't so bad at all, it was fun, intriguing, and makes us at the edge of our seats.
This movie is dedicated to Anton Yelchin, who died on car accident on June 19, 2016,.and Leonard Nimoy who plays as Spock on the previous series of Star Trek. May them rest in peace.
Overall, this movie is a disappointment, and people expect so much more from it. Funny jokes and new characters doesn't help this unbrilliant movie directed by Justin Lin. Actions scenes were fun for me at least, but the story was just too flat and not interesting at all.
