Movie Review: "Rogue One: Star Wars"

Movie Review: "Rogue One: Star Wars"

by Wilson Kosasih

With "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" gaining a huge success last year, and with "Star Wars Episode VIII" lurking next year, Disney releases a spin-off regarding the Rebel force's effort to bring down Death Star in "Star Wars: A New Hope", hoping that this will be a sweet present this Christmas. But will it be? Warning: This review may contain some spoiler

Former scientist Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) lives on a farm with his wife and young daughter Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). His peaceful existence comes crashing down when the evil Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) takes him away from his beloved family. Many years later, Galen is now the Empire's lead engineer for the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, the Death Star. Knowing that her father holds the key to its destruction, her father send a message to Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) hoping that he will receive it. Jyn then alongside Cassion Andor (Diego Luna), K-2S0, a modified empire droid, Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) set to retrieve Death Star's plan.

With The Force Awakens hype still in the air, i honestly was excited to see this movie and all. Was expecting to see some well-balanced story, stunning visuals, amazing soundtracks, and world-class acting. But not all of them fulfill my inner fanboy-ism. Sure, visuals and soundtracks are still amazing, it gets better and better in fact. Visuals are so detail that you don't even know that it's fake, and soundtracks with Dolby Atmos makes you feel that you are in the movie.

On the other hand, story feels so mediocre, it's like they are not trying that hard to make this movie a disappointment, while it has so much potential to be special. This movie is like fillers in Naruto and they decided to make it into a movie. It somehow connects to the movie, but it doesn't need to be a movie. This story material only deserves a web-episodic series kind of. Moreover, horrible acting by the casts make this more mediocre than the other Star Wars movie. Fortunately, action scenes in this movie makes me awake for the whole movie.

Overall, this movie is so-so with amazing visuals and soundtracks that will make you go "AW!" but goes "MEH!" because of the story and horrible acting. As a Star Wars fan, this is disappointment but i still enjoy it. Hope you enjoy this review and may be the Force with you all!
