Back again with another game review guys. This time i'm going to review "The Way of Samurai 4", the game is actually a port of the PS3 version which was released way back in the 2011. And thanks to Ghostlight for bringing the game to the PC. Since i never played the PS3 version before, i'm going to review the game based on how i plays this game.
Now straight to the review, the game is set in a fictional port town called Amihama in 1855. Players can create their own samurai and choose to align themselves with one of three factions: the pro-government forces, the anti-government rebels seeking to repel foreigners, or the British Navy stationed in the city to negotiate a peace treaty. When the negotiations between the local government of Amihama and British goes wrong after a Pranja attack at the meeting. The Tokugawa Shogunate sends one of their Tairō to quash the revolt. Little did everybody knew there is a plot to exploit the crisis to serve the Tairo's ends. The story take over the span of three days as the Tairo's visit in Amihama, Kinugawa seeing the potential of the Black Ships exploits the situation holds a tournament to decide the fate of the port.
The story ain't so special or whatsoever, but the freedom the game gives us to play the story based on our action always makes this kind of games special for me. You won/t know what will happen if you choose this side of the story and this game has high replay-value because of it.
The another thing which is a favorite to me is the character creation mode. We can make our samurai based on how we want it to be. This is how your samurai will probably looks like from the beginning of the game:
Your character |
I'll talk about the gameplay next. The gameplay of this game is quite challenging where you have to fight your enemies with some strategies. The control of our character is quite frustrating where there's no mouse support on this game and we have to use the keyboard to fight, talk to the civilian and rotate the camera, it's quite frustrating for me at first, but since i've played it for quite a time, i'm getting used to it. I'm still hoping that Ghostlight could have a patch for the mouse support.
Gameplay |
The game was capped to 30fps but the game is quite smooth and the loading times between zones/areas now barely exist. Next thing is the sound. I really appreciate the developer not to dub the game into English, because it will sound weird. The voice-acting is exceptional and amazing. The little problem about the sound is it sometimes stutters in the cutscenes and it really annoys me, i hope that the developer will fix that soon.
Overall, this game is amazing for those who like a sandbox-samurai game with a great storytelling and a high replay value. No mouse support and the stutters cutscenes will probably frustrates some people.
That's it from me. Thank you for reading and don't forget to share this post!
